Volume 4 Chapter 46: The Person Behind the Virtual Idol at the Convention Backstage
Back to Lin Lin’s side.
Actually, Lin Lin had always felt a little uncomfortable about going to comic conventions. She did not really like the idea and always felt a bit awkward about it.
But…
After she really walked into the convention with Gao Ye, both of them wearing normal clothes, Lin Lin realized she did not feel much at all. It was just that there were many strangers around, and quite a few of them were dressed as anime characters.
For Lin Lin, as long as she did not attract attention… ahem… she could enjoy as much “interesting” scenery as she wanted.
After her small curiosity was fully satisfied, Gao Ye finally led her through the crowd and found the backstage area.
“Whew, we finally found it.”
Gao Ye wiped the sweat from her forehead, then turned around and pulled Lin Lin by the shoulder.
“Sister Lin Lin, stop staring at the cosplayers! You look like a quiet, perverted anime nerd. You really have no idol image at all.”
“Ahem, no one knows who we are anyway.”
Lin Lin waved her hand and continued looking at a girl cosplaying Yor, Anya’s mom.
Sniff sniff.
“Hey, we’re here! Stop staring. I feel like I’m taking some weird middle-aged uncle to a convention.”
Gao Ye shook her head and sighed.
Lin Lin protested, waving her hand.
“I just have eyes that are good at discovering beauty.”
“Hmph. When I asked you to come to conventions before, you were never this interested,” Gao Ye complained helplessly.
Lin Lin felt a little confused.
How did she know that?
She had only told Sister Wenmei that she did not really want to come to conventions before.
But soon, the two of them turned around and were surprised by the stage where they would soon appear.
Well… not exactly appear in person.
Appear virtually.
Wow. This setup…
It was actually pretty good!
A large screen was neatly hung above the stage, placed at a perfect angle so the audience could watch comfortably without hurting their necks. Several powerful speakers were set up to make sure the sound and atmosphere would be clear and lively.
Not only that, the organizers had also prepared many chairs. From a distance, it really looked like a proper live event.
Compared to the fancy decorations, Lin Lin cared more about the basic conditions for the audience. In any case, the stage was ready. The rest would depend on her performance.
“So impressive~” Gao Ye nodded as she looked around.
When she got closer to the stage, the little devil suddenly saw a standee of her own character, a blonde catgirl, and immediately jumped excitedly.
“Sister Lin Lin, look! There’s even a standee of us!”
“Shh—!”
Lin Lin quickly covered Gao Ye’s mouth and nervously looked around. After making sure no one was nearby, she let go and complained:
“Keep your voice down! Do you want to expose yourself on the spot? Don’t forget, we’re not really going on stage today. We’re doing the live stream backstage. Be careful. Don’t let anyone recognize us.”
“Hey, don’t misunderstand. I’m just a fan of the catgirl, that’s all~”
Gao Ye still seemed unwilling to admit it and waved her hand stubbornly.
“Besides, Sister Lin Lin, your live stream voice is completely different from your normal speaking voice. Why are you so nervous?”
“Hmm…”
Lin Lin was almost confused by her words. After a moment, she shook her head and said:
“Let’s go backstage quickly. While there aren’t many people yet, we should go in now. It’ll be harder to enter once it gets crowded.”
“Well, no need to be so nervous~” Gao Ye smiled and said, “Let’s go. Sister Wenmei told me about a back door. If we go that way, no one will notice us.”
“Okay.”
After a short while, the two of them successfully slipped into the backstage area through a small path. They pushed open the door and walked into the room. Inside, they saw Sister Wenmei, wearing glasses and office lady clothes, sitting on the sofa in the lounge, flipping through a magazine out of boredom.
“Sister Wenmei~!”
Gao Ye happily ran over first and jumped into Du Wenmei’s arms. The glasses-wearing big sister was a little surprised that they arrived so early. She rubbed Gao Ye’s head while looking at Lin Lin with a smile.
“You came so fast~ I thought I would have to wait a bit longer.”
“We came to see if we need to rehearse or something first.”
Lin Lin also walked over and lay down on the sofa. It felt so comfortable~
“Mm-hmm, no rush for rehearsal. It’s still early before we start. Oh, right, I almost forgot something~”
Du Wenmei kept rubbing the girl in her arms and muttered,
“By the way, Xiao Ye, wouldn’t you look even cuter with blonde hair?”
“Huh… dyeing hair sounds like a lot of trouble.”
Gao Ye shook her head and finally sat up, sitting between Lin Lin and Du Wenmei.
Hearing her answer, Wenmei smiled and said,
“Just try it. If you don’t try, how will you know whether it looks good?”
“But if I dye my hair and it doesn’t look good, I can’t just dye it back right away, right? That’s way too troublesome…”
Gao Ye still did not understand what she meant. Du Wenmei seemed happy to keep speaking in hints.
Lin Lin listened to their conversation and slowly started to guess something.
“Could it be…?”
“No way…?”
Lin Lin and Gao Ye suddenly understood at the same time and spoke out almost together.
Of course, the more proper way of speaking was said by Gao Ye. The more casual one was from Lin Lin.
“That’s right! Just try a wig~”
Du Wenmei said this and then stood up. She picked up two sets of clothes from beside the sofa and handed them to Gao Ye.
“Th-this is…”
Gao Ye and Lin Lin both took a sharp breath.
Wow.
Gao Ye quickly tore open the package and took out the clothes inside. A golden wig, cat ears, a cute maid outfit, and even colored contact lenses. Everything was fully prepared.
“Ahhh—is this my custom cosplay outfit based on my anime character? Sister Wenmei, you already finished it? That’s amazing~”
The little devil happily hugged the cosplay outfit, looking like she wanted to put it on immediately.
In contrast, Lin Lin stood there, completely lost.
Uh…
The girl looked at the cosplay outfit in Gao Ye’s hands and felt her mind go blank.
So…
It really came to this?
Even though Sister Wenmei had mentioned earlier that the cosplay outfits were ready, Lin Lin had still hoped maybe she could avoid it.
But now, she had to face reality.
And…
There was still one unopened outfit in Gao Ye’s hands.
Lin Lin swallowed nervously.
Oh no…
Could that one be…
A custom cosplay outfit for Ari-chan?
It must be, right?
The more she thought about it, the more Lin Lin slowly fell into silent despair…
