Chapter 149: The Virtuous Wife Attribute is Overwhelming
This conversation was getting more and more awkward.
Lin Yibai tried to figure out how the topic had even turned to having kids. She had no idea how it got there!
Luckily, she realized it in time and stopped the conversation.
That way, she wouldn’t have to become a mom, wouldn’t have to breastfeed a baby, and wouldn’t have to worry about whether the baby could drink it all.
Waste is shameful. If a baby can’t finish it, should the adults...? Ahem. Let’s just stop there.
“Please have some tea~”
Lin Yibai, like the lady of the house, made hot tea using a lidded tea bowl. Normally, even some guys find it hard to handle tea at that temperature.
But she calmly picked up the bowl, poured the tea into a filter cup, then into a delicate teacup, and politely handed it to Xia Changyu.
Xia Changyu came from a well-off family, so of course he was used to good tea.
But what mattered most wasn’t the tea leaves, it was the person making the tea. Even the best tea in the world wouldn’t taste good if it was brewed badly.
He took a small sip and his eyes lit up. “Wow, this tastes even better than I expected! Normally I just grab a handful of tea leaves and throw them in a mug.”
Lin Yibai said, “You drank like a cow.”
Xia Changyu took another sip and continued, “I only drink tea this carefully made during holidays, when my mom makes it.”
Lin Yibai squinted her eyes and asked a dangerous question. “So, whose tea tastes better, your mom’s or mine?”
Xia Changyu: ……
She might as well have asked, ‘If your mom and I both fell into a river, who would you save first?’
These were the two most important women in his life. How could he choose?
He gave a small smile and said, “My mom’s tea is richer, and yours is lighter and more elegant. Both are great!”
That was clearly a hint.
If she kept pushing after that, it would just make her look unreasonable.
So Lin Yibai smiled slightly and whispered, “Don’t worry. I know how to swim. I’ll save Auntie first, you don’t need to.”
But, wait!
Why would she explain something like that to him? Clearly, there's no benefit in it for him at all, right?
Still, her annoying rival was visibly happy. It was obvious that boys really like girls who are kind, gentle, and understanding.
To be honest, it wasn’t just Xia Changyu. Any boy who spent time with Lin Yibai when she was in girl form would probably fall for her, right in the heart.
Splish splash—
Rain hit the window loudly.
The rain outside was still falling steadily, showing no signs of stopping even as the neon lights came on.
Was she really not going to be able to go home?
Lin Yibai didn’t want her first time visiting a boy’s house to end with her having to stay the night. That didn’t feel right…
While she was still hesitating, Xia Changyu was getting more and more hopeful, like victory was just around the corner.
Just a little longer, I mean, just one more night. Please, please let her stay the night here!
He stood next to the big floor-to-ceiling window.
From there, he could look out over the busy walking street below. Cars were moving nonstop, lights were everywhere, and shops looked a bit lonely in the pouring rain.
As expected, she really couldn’t go home.
Xia Changyu gave a small cough and quickly said, "I don’t think this rain will stop any time soon. How about we wait a bit longer? Maybe it’ll stop later tonight. What do you think?"
Lin Yibai rolled her eyes and replied helplessly, "Do you think I even have a choice right now?"
"Great! Haha—ah, wait..." Xia Changyu almost jumped up in excitement, but quickly tried to act serious again. "I'll order dinner delivery right now."
“No need for delivery, the rain’s too heavy. I’ll cook for you instead,” Lin Yibai stopped him and walked straight over to the big three-door fridge.
What should I make for dinner?
Should I just cook noodles for him again?
Unfortunately, when she opened the fridge, that plan fell apart. There were barely any fruits, vegetables, meat, or eggs. But there was a lot of soda, beer, and snacks. Enough to make her head hurt.
She picked out a pack of slightly dry bread and asked curiously, "Is this what you usually eat?"
Xia Changyu’s face turned red. He tried to explain, "I’m really not a messy person. I just don’t have time. I spend three days a week at school and two days at home. I really don’t have time to shop or cook."
Lin Yibai sighed and said, "You can’t live like this! After all that talk, you’re just trying to blame everything on being single, right?"
Xia Changyu muttered, "Well, am I wrong?"
Lin Yibai shook her head and continued, "You really need to find a girlfriend, preferably someone kind and caring. But definitely don’t go after someone like Gu Xiaoxue again. A guy like you should be with someone who’s good at taking care of a home, gentle and thoughtful. And if you’re lucky, maybe even pretty too."
Xia Changyu mumbled, "Isn’t that just... you?"
Lin Yibai shut the fridge and stood with her hands on her hips, "I said go find someone. I didn’t say find me. Got it?"
Xia Changyu looked away and scoffed, "As if it’s that easy. Meeting you already feels like a once-in-a-lifetime miracle."
"You—!"
Ugh, forget it. Arguing with this annoying guy is just tiring. Let him think whatever he wants.
She pulled out a bag with some frozen chicken legs, shrimp, a few old-looking green onions, and a head of Chinese cabbage.
Huh, not bad after all!
And the rice he had was from Wuchang! That’s one of the best-tasting rice types in all of China, even famous worldwide!
After defrosting, she braised the chicken legs.
She cut the shrimp and coated them with egg and flour before deep-frying (you have to fry them, or they’ll smell fishy).
She removed the green onion leaves and used the stalks to stir-fry the cabbage.
The rain was heavy, so there was no rush. And just like that, she really started acting like the perfect wife.
Xia Changyu leaned against the kitchen doorway, smiling nonstop. He couldn’t help but admire her.
“...Baiyi is really starting to look more and more like the perfect wife... wait, scratch that, she’s already perfect. If only I could make her my legal wife...”
He sighed, full of hope and dreams. But also a bit of sadness.
What is home-style cooking? It’s food made with care by someone who loves you.
Maybe it can’t compare to food made by a five-star chef, but when Xia Changyu secretly took a bite, to him it was the most delicious thing in the world.
Lin Yibai rolled her eyes again and asked grumpily, “Is it good?”
Xia Changyu nodded seriously, “If it wasn’t good, I wouldn’t be sneaking bites.”
She asked again, “So which one do you like more? The braised chicken legs? The fried shrimp? The stir-fried cabbage? Or the Wuchang rice?”
No matter what you pick, doesn’t that mean the others weren’t as good?
Forget it, just go for it!
Xia Changyu smiled slightly, looked at her, and said, “They're all delicious, but let's be real, even an idiot knows you're the most delicious.”
What the hell.
You jerk!!
He was totally impossible to beat.
