Chapter 82: Good Luck or Bad Luck
After washing up and packing her schoolbag, Lin Muqing was finally ready to leave for school.
Before going out, she glanced at a photo on the wall. A picture of herself wearing boys’ clothes.
When that photo was taken, her body hadn't changed yet. Looking at it now, she suddenly felt a bit nostalgic.
“Mom, Dad, I’m heading out now.”
She greeted the people in the photo, then opened the door and walked outside.
Honestly, ever since her body changed, it didn’t feel like such a bad thing after all.
Thinking back to the start of summer break, basically when her body started changing, it felt like her luck had suddenly maxed out.
Good things just kept happening. First, she found a great part-time job, and then she met someone as kind as Sister Yu.
Looking back, it was easy to notice how different things had become compared to before.
And if she thought about it more carefully, the good luck actually started back in the first semester of high school.
That was when she met Ye Ziming and became close buddies with him. Since then, her luck had just kept getting better.
“Hey, do you believe in luck?” she asked.
On the way to school, Lin Muqing kept thinking about that question. No matter how she looked at it, it felt like something out of a fantasy, kind of like the jade pendant she always wore.
It didn’t seem like something science could explain.
So when she saw her good buddy on the road, she quickly walked up to him, hesitated a little, and then asked out loud.
“Not really,” Ye Ziming replied after glancing at her with a slightly confused look. His face stayed calm as he answered.
“I feel like... ever since high school started, I’ve been really lucky...” Lin Muqing explained, noticing the confusion in his eyes.
She went on to explain why she said that.
Before high school, her luck was honestly pretty bad.
There weren’t any big disasters, but she always had bad luck in little things.
For example, when guessing on multiple choice tests, her correct answer rate was way lower than 25%. And when it came to drawing lots, she always seemed to pick the worst one.
Because of this, she even believed that the thing that happened more than a year ago was also her fault, caused by her bad luck.
Back then, a tour bus had an accident. Two people sadly died, while the others only had minor injuries.
As for her, she just had a light scrape on her arm. It didn’t even need a bandage.
“Don’t overthink it. Your luck was never bad. You just need to believe in yourself,” Ye Ziming said gently, raising his hand to ruffle her hair as she was still speaking.
“Really?”
Lin Muqing didn’t quite believe him. She felt like he was just trying to make her feel better.
“Have I ever lied to you?”
Ye Ziming responded with a question of his own, without skipping a beat.
After patting her head, he quickly pulled his hand back and turned to keep walking toward class.
Behind him, Lin Muqing stood frozen for a moment, surprised.
As she thought about what he said, she slowly raised her hand to touch the top of her head. Deep down, she felt an unexpected sense of calm.
“Really?” she softly repeated, watching his back.
She really wanted to believe him, because the thing that happened during summer break last year gave her nightmares for a long time.
Some people even blamed her, saying the accident happened because of her.
That the reason only two people were hurt on the bus... was also because of her.
“…What’s wrong?”
While Lin Muqing was still lost in her thoughts, Ye Ziming’s voice suddenly came from ahead.
He had been walking when he noticed Lin Muqing wasn’t beside him.
Turning around, he was surprised to see her just standing there in a daze, so he asked in confusion.
As he spoke, he had already turned back and looked a bit concerned, wondering if maybe she wasn’t feeling well.
“Ah, it’s nothing.”
Hearing his voice snapped Lin Muqing back to reality. She quickly walked up to her best friend with a few quick steps.
She smiled again and walked with him toward the classroom.
Maybe her best friend was right, luck and fate were just things she imagined in her own head.
That’s what Lin Muqing thought to herself.
…………………………
The two of them arrived at the classroom fairly early. There weren’t many students there yet, and the class monitor had only just sat down.
Back at her seat, Lin Muqing began organizing her bag and took out the homework she finished yesterday to hand in or have it checked.
Since they were high schoolers, everyone had become a bit more self-disciplined, so they didn’t have to turn in homework every day.
Some of the “lazier” teachers didn’t even collect homework once a week. It all depended on the students being responsible.
“What are you looking at that’s making you smile so creepily?”
After tidying up, Lin Muqing noticed a weird giggle coming from the seat next to hers, Lin Wenbin’s.
She turned her head and looked at him with a face full of disgust, asking directly.
“What do you mean ‘creepy’!”
Hearing this, Lin Wenbin got upset right away.
He put down his phone, turned to her with a frown, and slapped his desk, staring straight at Lin Muqing like he was really mad.
“What part of you isn’t creepy?”
Lin Muqing shot back right away.
“Ask your buddy Ye Ziming. If he says you’re not creepy, I’ll believe it.”
She pointed at her good bro behind her and smirked at Lin Wenbin with a teasing, challenging look.
She didn’t feel like arguing with Lin Wenbin, so she just pulled out her ace, her buddy, to shut him down!
“You… go away.”
Lin Wenbin glared at Lin Muqing, then snuck a glance at Ye Ziming behind her. With a face full of frustration, he turned his head back and went back to playing on his phone.
What a coincidence, when he looked at Ye Ziming, Ye Ziming was also giving him a side-eye. That alone made him choke on his own words.
Everyone in the class knew that those two were practically joined at the hip. Offending one meant offending both.
“Haha~”
Seeing Lin Wenbin totally shut down, Lin Muqing was in a great mood and laughed happily.
Daily task: Make Lin Wenbin speechless (Task complete: 1/1)
While she was still enjoying herself, two students from another class came up to Lin Wenbin. It looked like something urgent.
Lin Muqing wasn’t surprised. Lin Wenbin wasn’t great at studying, but he did have a lot of connections in school.
It was pretty normal for students from other classes to come find him and call him “Brother Lin” politely.
“You couldn’t find her?”
Lin Wenbin asked in surprise.
“No, we searched all three grades,” the other student said helplessly.
“Could it be she’s not even from our school?”
Lin Wenbin asked again.
As he said that, he turned to glance at Ye Ziming, and his face showed that he clearly had more to say.
