Chapter 87: The So-Called Bounty
She said she didn’t want to listen, but her actions said otherwise.
Even though she had already filled her bottle with water, she didn’t go back to the classroom right away. Instead, she stayed and listened to Lin Wenbin talk about some stories from the past involving her best bro.
She only knew that in this school, her bond with her best bro was the strongest, nobody could beat it.
And because of that, she actually felt kind of proud. After all, she had done something no one else could.
After listening, she was surprised to realize that she was the person closest to her best bro. That wasn’t just impressive, it was amazing.
“The thing is, our Knights’ Club recently put up a bounty.”
Seeing Lin Muqing looking at him with obvious dislike, Lin Wenbin wasn’t upset. He just kept talking on his own.
“Bounty?”
When she heard the words “Knights’ Club,” Lin Muqing’s eyelid twitched. She had a bad feeling about this.
“If anyone can provide a clue about the maid girl, they can get this much in money.”
“You guys are crazy.”
Seeing how many fingers Lin Wenbin held up, Lin Muqing had a very complicated expression. She even took a step back, trying to put some distance between them.
She never imagined they would go this far just to find her. This was completely insane!
“Hmph! If someone really finds the maid girl, they’ll get all the money in the bounty pool. That’s this much!”
As he said that, Lin Wenbin showed another number with his fingers, an amount that felt terrifying to Lin Muqing.
What he called the “bounty pool” was basically made up of a bunch of bored people saying things like, “If someone finds her, I’ll give (x) amount of money!”
Each person didn’t offer that much, but there were a lot of them. So all that money added up into one big prize.
“Wait! I think there’s a serious problem with what you guys are doing.”
Her eyebrow twitched hard as Lin Muqing interrupted him, her face full of mixed feelings.
After hearing it all, one word popped into her head, illegal fundraising.
Besides, they were all high school students, mostly minors. If they really went through with this, something bad was bound to happen.
“There’s nothing illegal about it. If you use your connection with Brother Ye and help us find out who the new school beauty is, we’ll all send you money, one by one. And—”
“Sorry, I’m not interested!”
She interrupted Lin Wenbin again and turned to walk straight back to the classroom, not wanting to deal with him anymore.
She hadn’t realized how crazy this whole thing was until now. Lin Muqing just couldn’t understand these people. Were they really that bored?!
Even as she walked off, Lin Wenbin followed behind her, still trying to “convince” her.
After all, she had the closest relationship with Ye Ziming in the entire school, she was their best chance.
“If Brother Ye finds out about your sneaky moves… what do you think he’ll do?”
Lin Muqing stopped at the classroom door and slowly turned around with a polite but deadly smile on her face.
She was clearly done with him. Her tone was full of annoyance and disgust.
“Okay! Okay! I won’t say anything else!”
The moment he heard “Brother Ye,” Lin Wenbin waved his hands in surrender and ran off in another direction instead of going back to class.
“Phew~ These people are seriously out of their minds.”
Lin Muqing let out a sigh in her heart and complained to the air.
Just a moment ago, she was still hoping for peaceful, uneventful days. But now it seemed like fate had other plans. It didn’t want her to live quietly, and even seemed to want to mess with her a little.
It’s only been just over a week since school started, and already so many things had happened. How is she supposed to live a normal life like this!?
(*╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻ (flips table)
She returned to her seat, casually handed her water bottle back to her best buddy, and rested her head on one hand as she started thinking.
These past few days had made her more and more laid-back, to the point that when she heard people were spending money to look for her, she barely reacted.
She had already given up. If they wanted to search, let them search. They wouldn’t find anything on her anyway.
“What did Lin Wenbin say to you?”
While Lin Muqing was lost in thought, Ye Ziming had been keeping an eye on her the whole time.
What he saw was Lin Wenbin saying something to Lin Muqing at the classroom door, and afterward, she looked troubled.
That really bothered him, so he had to ask.
As he spoke, his brows furrowed and a dangerous aura quietly rose around him.
It was directed at Lin Wenbin, so Lin Muqing didn’t notice it, and Ye Ziming didn’t want her to feel it either.
“Huh?”
She was a bit surprised. She thought her best buddy hadn’t seen anything and was still debating whether to tell him.
“Umm… It’s actually not a big deal. Do you want to hear it?”
After hesitating for half a second, she decided that her friendship with Lin Wenbin was flimsier than plastic. Selling him out wouldn’t even make her feel guilty.
So, yeah, might as well sell him out. Keeping quiet would only cause more drama.
“Tell me.”
Ye Ziming spat out the word with a blank face, clearly serious.
“Well… here’s what happened…”
She spent a bit of time telling the whole story in detail.
“That’s it?”
“Yup, that’s it.”
“Got it.”
Ye Ziming gave a small nod. After hearing her explanation, his expression turned unreadable. He wasn’t smiling or frowning.
Except Lin Muqing could tell. As his closest friend, she knew he was in a bad mood, and even noticed a faint murderous aura around him.
That was a little scary. She was pretty sure her best buddy might actually go after Lin Wenbin.
Her thought on that was, ‘If you’re really going to do it, make sure to invite me. I’ll bring snacks and a little stool to enjoy the show.’
“Ahem… Boss, I think they’re just a bunch of bored people, really.”
She gave a little nervous laugh and leaned closer to him with a smile.
“Hm?”
Ye Ziming frowned again after hearing that, looking confused. He thought she was trying to defend those people.
“Don’t get me wrong, Boss. What I mean is… shrimp and pig heart actually go really well together, don’t you think?”
Looking into his eyes, Lin Muqing quickly guessed what he was thinking and waved her hands to explain.
“I think that makes sense.”
Ye Ziming chuckled softly with the corners of his lips lifted. He felt like what she said really hit the spot.
As expected of his good buddy, their connection was so strong, just a glance was enough to understand each other.
Though there was one thing Lin Muqing didn’t say, when she first heard about the bounty pool, she was tempted.
But after thinking about where that money came from, she quickly gave up on the idea. She didn’t want to be involved with that so-called “Knight Order” at all.
And to be honest, she wasn’t short on money right now. If not for saving up for life after graduation, she could already be living pretty comfortably.
As for the demolition stuff, she planned to use the compensation to buy a new home somewhere else and start fresh.
Ehehe… once the demolition goes through, she’ll actually be rich. She’s kind of looking forward to it.
