[Vol. 7] Chapter 293: The One Who Walks in Shadows
Violet stopped thinking about the confusing questions and turned her eyes back to the red-haired girl in her arms.
The [Agent of Fate], had a complicated connection with the real princess. They weren’t two separate personalities in the usual sense. More accurately, Carinvega had only one consciousness from beginning to end, but her memories and her “essence” as a living being were split into two different, not fully connected parts.
The memories from her life as a princess and her past formed most of her outward personality, she was a real person. But the part that came from the ancient memories of the [Agent of Fate], passed down over millions of years, existed inside her consciousness.
That part was filled with divine power and had almost no emotions. It was the agent side, hiding behind her outer form to avoid being noticed and attacked by the [Wheel of Fate].
The one who had fought and spoken with Violet just now was still Carinvega herself. But at that moment, her human side was completely overwhelmed by her godlike powers, which made her seem like a totally different person.
So, all the things that happened earlier, at least the important parts, were most likely still remembered by the princess. The reason she fainted wasn’t because her personality changed, but simply because she was exhausted.
Even with Xiao Guang’s help, it was impossible to break free from the complete control of the [Wheel of Fate] without paying some kind of price. On top of that, she had also forced herself to change some threads of fate to fulfill “her own” wish, which made things even harder.
After this, Carinvega would probably need time to rest. Since she knew a lot about what really happened, Violet would definitely need to find a chance to talk with her once she woke up.
Violet put the [Lion’s Ring] into her bag, then carelessly laid the limp, fish-like fainted princess on the ground. She looked up at the sky again.
The huge black clouds, twisted into a wide stormy sky and swirling vortex, had been torn apart by the giant wings and burned away by the [Primordial Flame]. Now, bright sunlight, belonging to the daytime, was shining down again through the broken clouds. The dark, gloomy twilight was slowly fading, as if telling the world that the disaster was finally over.
But that didn’t mean the [Wheel of Fate] was truly destroyed. After all, it wasn’t a being with a body. It was a formless force, just like the [Tree of Creation], almost all-powerful and all-knowing. As long as the [Primordial Flame], which was Xiao Guang’s power, stopped its attacks, the storm of backlash and fate would likely return soon, pulled by the threads of destiny.
But now that the connection of fate had been forcefully cut off, and the [Agent of Fate] had gone back into hiding and returned to being Carinvega, the [Wheel of Fate], having lost its target, could only withdraw and leave.
After all, that was the rule.
In the end, not having a body or personal will was both its greatest strength and its biggest weakness. It only knew how to follow rules. Even though it had clearly locked onto Carinvega as a specific target, once the connection was broken, it gave up without resistance. If it were one of the gods that had a real personality and will, this kind of thing would never happen.
As the dark clouds in the sky slowly faded away, the massive dragon that had torn through the darkness with its wings also vanished. Violet, who now knew what had happened thanks to her contract, let out a small sigh of relief and waved her staff.
The [Eternal Light of Protection] that had been covering the Academy City quietly turned into golden sparks and disappeared. It looked like this whole event was finally coming to an end.
Since arriving in this world, this was the third time Violet had openly used such a large-scale Tier 10 forbidden spell. Compared to the times in the [Forest of Calamity] and [Sky Island], the consequences this time would definitely be more serious, but she didn’t regret it.
The event had originally started because the Austre Empire wanted to use the summit in Sainz to spread its influence and gain an early advantage in the upcoming war. But if Violet hadn’t insisted on uncovering Carinvega’s secrets, even using such an extreme method to draw out the [Agent of Fate] inside her, and then question that being about the truth of Fate, things wouldn’t have gone this far.
Just like what happened back in the Ancient Spirit Realm, Violet had never planned to run away from the responsibilities she should take. Even if it meant doing something that might shock the entire world, she would still protect the innocent people who got caught up in the mess.
If you put it in the language of fate, maybe this was what people call karma.
Anyway, Violet had already asked Lucine to evacuate the civilians in the area ahead of time, so there was no need to worry about the spell itself causing information pollution or panic. No one would know that she was the one behind this event.
Suspicions? What good are suspicions? If needed, she could just shift all the blame onto the Goddess of the Holy Empire. Wasn’t Sethlin just getting ready to start her whole “Chosen Hero” project? Just say it was all part of the goddess’s plan. What did it have to do with Violet?
“Mhm, that’s right!”
Nodding to herself with satisfaction, the black-haired girl, who had already come up with her excuse, glanced at the unconscious princess lying nearby. Hearing the sound of many footsteps getting closer from a distance, she pulled on her [Chameleon Cloak] and flew up into the sky.
All the other small, annoying follow-up matters could be left to Sainz and the Headmaster of the academy to slowly deal with. Instead of dealing with a bunch of people who would definitely keep asking endless questions, there was one important person she still had to meet before this whole thing was truly over.
That guy was much more interesting than all those officials. Lucine might not be able to catch him, but that didn’t mean no one could~
Let’s rewind time a little, back to when a certain priestess was still in a battle of wits and willpower with the [Agent of Fate].
Sainz’ First District, in a quiet alley near the [Tower of Origin].
A card marked with a door-shaped symbol quietly appeared in the air. A portal opened from it, and a man in a black magician’s suit stepped lightly out. He took off a pair of white gloves that had once been stained with the blood of the princess, though by now the blood had dried into a dark red color, and put them into his pocket. Then, calmly and carefully, he put on a new pair of gloves and let out a relaxed breath.
After doing all this, he looked left and right in the empty alley, as if checking whether anyone had followed him. Once he confirmed no one had, he shook his head with a sigh.
“Heh... We’ve known each other for so long, and yet Lucine still doesn’t hold back at all. I’ve used this escape spell so many times, she’s probably figured it out by now. Guess I’ll need to come up with something new next time...”
“But now... whether it’s His Divineness or His Imperial Majesty, I’ve completed all their assignments. Finally, I don’t have to risk my neck for them in this mess anymore. Really, who would believe it if someone said a father hired someone to kill his own son or daughter? Ah, rulers can be so heartless…”
Talking to himself, the man known as the [Immortal Magician] looked up toward the sky. Up above, the swirling rainbow-colored magical energy had turned that part of the sky into a deadly zone no living being should enter.
