[Vol. 8] Chapter 11: Lorga Blanca
With that scream and thick smoke rising into the air, the girl fell to the ground and rolled around, her body shaking hard like she was being tortured. Her eyes turned white, and her body twitched as if in great pain.
Even though the undead don’t feel normal physical pain or have most body functions, this power from a god hit her soul directly, so the pain wasn’t something physical, but far worse.
“Uh, Lady Violet...”
The teachings of the Goddess Church strictly forbid torture. Even when dealing with demons or undead, creatures considered unnatural and evil, they are supposed to be purified quickly and directly. Seeing the undead girl suffering so much from the mysterious golden flame, the kind-hearted Saintess, Frederica, started to speak out.
But Violet quickly shook her head at her and gave her a look that meant, “Don’t worry, wait and see.” So Frederica quietly held back her words and kept watching.
After quite a while, the undead magic-user girl, who had been marked with a trace of the Primordial Flame, finally began to calm down. Her already pale face now looked completely bloodless. She didn’t dare complain, and instead struggled to get up, keeping her head down in silence. She knelt and showed a respectful, submissive posture.
“Th-Thank you... for freeing me from that curse.”
Seeing that the girl at least knew how to behave, Violet shook her head slightly and spoke in a calm, cold voice.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. I only did that so you’ll answer our questions honestly. You should be able to feel that flame inside you. I don’t plan to control you with it... but if you lie or hide anything from us—”
The hidden meaning in Violet’s voice made the undead girl shiver again. She quickly nodded, keeping her eyes on the ground, clearly too scared to look up at Violet or the dragon lady next to her.
“Yes! Yes, I’m willing to tell you everything I know!”
Although she was undead, she seemed to have very sharp instincts, maybe even sharper than most living beings. She could tell right away that Violet and the dragon girl were the strongest people there, and she clearly treated them with the most respect.
“First, your name.”
“Lorga... my name is Lorga Blanca…”
Her voice sounded rough, maybe because of the burning pain she had just suffered from the Primordial Flame, or maybe because her voice no longer worked the same way after being brought back as undead.
Even so, everyone there could still hear a kind of noble tone and graceful manner in her voice. It seemed likely that she hadn’t been just an ordinary mage when she was alive.
But Violet didn’t focus on that. She quickly asked another question.
“Were you the one leading the attack? Can you stop those things out there?”
She was clearly talking about the wave after wave of skeletons outside.
Even though Leila had already defeated them many times, the skeleton warriors kept coming back together and getting stronger. Because of their strange undead nature, they weren’t staying down, and Lorga’s defeat, as well as the others who had just been taken out by Xiao Guang, didn’t stop them either.
It was obvious now, either this girl was the key to stopping them... or someone else was still controlling them from behind the scenes.
The undead girl slightly trembled, as if afraid of upsetting someone. When asked about the situation, she glanced nervously at the countless skeletons still fighting the holy knights in the distance, then shook her head with a troubled look on her face.
“I... I can’t do it. Just like me, they were all brought back to life by our master. I do have some control over them, but I can’t change their core orders.”
So it’s just as expected...
Most undead in this world are not naturally formed. When a necromancer creates the undead, they usually place a control spell on them right away. This makes them easier to command and keeps them fully under control.
Earlier, Violet had used the power of Xiao Guang’s Primordial Flame, which can burn through anything, to destroy the binding spell inside Lorga’s body, so she could speak freely without being controlled.
Of course, the priestess still didn’t fully trust the undead girl. That flame still remained inside her like a hidden bomb. If anything went wrong, even from thousands of miles away, the Dragon God could instantly detonate it and turn Lorga to ash.
“Who is your master? Why did they send you to attack this group? Do you have any other hidden powers or backup plans?”
Faced with question after question from the black-haired girl, Lorga kept her head down and answered quietly and honestly.
“...My master’s identity is very secret. I was one of the first undead they brought back and was treated as important, but I’ve only been awake for a little more than two weeks. I’ve barely met him in person, never seen his real face. As for the reason for the attack, all he told us was to lie in wait here and destroy any group that gave off a strong light aura. They didn’t explain why...”
“Other than that, there are indeed a few undead secret arts my master taught us that haven’t been used yet. But because he was so powerful, he instantly killed all the other main undead magic-users except for me. So now, only the [Undead Legion] is left...”
“[Undead Legion]? What a confident name.”
It was clear that the [Undead Legion] Lorga spoke of referred to the army of skeletons that kept pulling themselves back together again and again, seemingly impossible to destroy completely.
By now, Violet had figured out most of the situation. These skeleton soldiers were probably summoned all at once by a single massive undead spell. Even though they looked like many separate enemies, they were actually powered by a single, shared magical source.
To put it simply, all these skeletons were like small pieces broken off from one big being. As long as the main source of their power still existed, they could keep reforming endlessly and would be very hard to wipe out completely.
Still, even though they were troublesome, that only applied to normal people. If someone reached a high enough power level and had the right kind of abilities to counter them, the so-called “undying” would become a joke.
The enemy had clearly done research on this team before the attack. Although powerful, neither the two angels, Leila and Rene, nor the Saintess Frederica, who carried the Sword of Judgment, had the kind of wide-range destructive power needed to destroy the skeletons completely.
In other words, they lacked the means to totally erase the skeletons, like burning them with endless holy fire until nothing was left, or crushing them with space magic to stop their regeneration for good.
