Chapter 33: The Distance of Life
Su Moyu felt a chill in her heart as she listened.
She had never thought that such a serious illness would one day happen to someone close to her.
She hadn’t interacted much with Bai Shuchuan’s father, but in her memory, he was always strict with Bai Shuchuan. However, whenever she came to their house, his serious face would soften, and he would give her a gentle smile.
The light inside the car was dim. Sitting in the front passenger seat, Su Moyu watched the headlights light up the dark mountain road ahead. Light rain was falling steadily, and the car was very quiet. All she could hear was the sound of raindrops.
She didn’t really know how to comfort Bai Xiaqing.
The pain of losing a family member… she had never truly felt it. She only vaguely remembered that when she was a child, after watching some cartoon, she suddenly understood that death meant a permanent separation. That night, she begged her grandfather not to die and cried the whole night.
A faint smile appeared on Su Moyu’s face, lit by the soft glow from the car’s dashboard.
Fortunately, her grandparents were still alive.
She wasn’t exactly sad, she just felt that the atmosphere was a bit heavy.
But because of that, she also felt some pressure. Now that she was basically part of the Bai family, if she acted too cold, would people talk badly about her?
She thought about this silently.
“My dad always seemed very healthy. He didn’t smoke or drink,” Bai Xiaqing continued. “Before, he even fainted during class, but he didn’t tell anyone. He just thought he was too tired.”
“Then he felt dizzy and had a fever for a week. When he went to the hospital for a check-up, it was already late-stage liver cancer,” Bai Xiaqing said, her voice choking and slightly trembling.
“For the time he has left, just stay with him as much as possible,” Su Moyu said after thinking for a moment.
Maybe Bai Xiaqing understood better than her how to deal with this kind of situation.
She only needed to listen quietly.
“That’s all we can do… sigh,” Bai Xiaqing replied. “The doctor said his liver is already full of cancer cells. No one can say what will happen tomorrow.”
Su Moyu let out a soft sigh and secretly looked up at the rearview mirror. Because it was too dark, she couldn’t see Bai Shuchuan’s expression clearly.
When they finally got home, Su Moyu saw Bai Shuchuan’s mother standing downstairs.
“You’re back…” Bai’s mother forced a stiff smile. When Su Moyu saw her bloodshot eyes, she truly felt what this sudden illness had brought to the family.
“Mom…” Bai Shuchuan called softly. Looking at her, he suddenly didn’t know what to say.
It felt like he had many things to say, but when he saw that familiar face, all his words disappeared.
“…Go see your father,” Bai’s mother said quietly. “Xiao Su, you should come too. He has something to say to both of you.”
Su Moyu swallowed, looking a bit nervous.
“Okay,” she replied, then glanced at Bai Shuchuan before walking upstairs first.
Everything in Bai Shuchuan’s house still felt familiar, though there were some new changes compared to what she remembered.
His father’s room was on the second floor. Su Moyu reached out and knocked on the door, then heard his voice from inside.
“Come in.”
