Chapter 39: Silent Understanding

For a moment, Bai Shuchuan didn’t know how to answer.

“No,” Su Moyu said softly. “What would we even argue about?”

When Bai Shuchuan heard this, he suddenly felt a sense of relief.

A smile returned to Bai Xiaqing’s face. “That’s good.”

Su Moyu nodded, lowered her head, and quietly finished her meal. Then she went to help Bai’s mother wash the dishes.

“Xiao Yu, can you help me teach one class this afternoon?” Bai’s mother gently said, refusing Su Moyu’s help.

Su Moyu was confused. Did that mean she had to teach a class for her?

She looked up at Bai’s mother and saw her tired eyes, full of red veins and dark circles. She suddenly felt too embarrassed to refuse.

“Uh…? I might not be able to do it,” Su Moyu said after hesitating for a moment.

“Oh, it’s very simple. My students all say you explain things very well,” Bai’s mother said in a relaxed tone. “I need to handle something this afternoon. Can you help me?”

Hearing this, Su Moyu felt even more pressure.

“Then… alright.”

It was just middle school chemistry. There was no way she would mess it up, right? Back then, her chemistry was really good.

She thought this to herself, and then heard Bai’s mother continue, “The test papers are on my desk. The questions I circled are the important ones to explain.”

“Okay,” Su Moyu nodded, finally feeling a bit relieved.

At least she could prepare in advance. If she had to go in without preparation, she would really be afraid of embarrassing herself.

After all, her peak learning ability was back in high school.

“Shuchuan, come help wash the vegetables,” Bai’s mother called again.

“Okay,” Bai Shuchuan responded.

Su Moyu felt she didn’t need to think too much…

After all, it was impossible for her and Bai Shuchuan to actually end up together, right?

She walked upstairs. After entering the quiet room, the uneasy feeling in her heart only made her more restless.

If she was going to be reborn, fine, but why did she have to change gender too?

She reached out and opened the stack of test papers on the desk.

Changing gender was one thing, but Bai Shuchuan was still the same Bai Shuchuan she knew. If… if it were the original version of him from this world, and if he treated her very well, maybe she could even fool herself.

Su Moyu let out a soft breath. Her eyes then fell on a photo on the desk.

Bai’s father was sitting on a chair, wearing a pure white suit. Bai’s mother stood behind him in a wedding dress, smiling gently.

Su Moyu blinked. She suddenly wondered if she and Bai Shuchuan also had wedding photos like this.

She recalled how it felt when she wore a wedding dress. The light, airy feeling, the long skirt spreading beneath her, and the veil brushing against her shoulders with a soft, ticklish touch.

What was the meaning of marriage?

She couldn’t help but think about it.

Was it to continue the family line? Or a bond decided by fate? But even without marriage, two people who truly love each other could still stay together for life.

Looking at the happy couple in the photo, Su Moyu suddenly remembered that Bai’s father was already seriously ill with cancer.

Everything felt so ordinary…

Su Moyu lowered her eyes to look at the questions. At that moment, sunlight came through the window and lit up part of the desk, making it feel warm and peaceful.

It felt like this family had a silent understanding.

Life was still going on. Everyone was trying to avoid the things that would truly make them sad, as if Bai’s father being seriously ill had never happened.

………………………

The middle school questions were quite simple. Su Moyu finally felt what it meant to handle things with ease, and then started wondering how she used to get questions like these wrong before.

She really couldn’t understand it.

She took some clothes out of her suitcase, planning to take a shower before going to school.

Seriously, one day she actually became a substitute teacher, even if just temporarily.

If she dressed too attractively at school, just thinking about it made her feel embarrassed.

Especially because when she was in middle school, she would unconsciously look a few more times at the pretty English teacher.

To avoid getting stared at, Su Moyu decided to wear something more simple.

She could already imagine the boys in the class grinning widely when they saw that instead of Bai’s mother, a pretty young woman came to teach.

She understood it well, because Bai’s mother was the kind of strict, serious middle-aged teacher that she used to be afraid of as a child.

Su Moyu took her clothes and walked into the bathroom, then took off what she was wearing…

When she came out after getting dressed, her long wet hair hung behind her, blocking her view.

“So annoying,” she muttered.

She had been to Bai Shuchuan’s house many times, but since it wasn’t her own home, it still felt a bit unfamiliar.

She pushed her wet hair back and looked around the bathroom, but couldn’t find the hair dryer.

“Bai Shuchuan!” she called out.

“What is it?” his voice came from the room.

“Where’s the hair dryer?” she asked.

Bai Shuchuan took the hair dryer down from the rack above. Only then did Su Moyu realize it was placed so high, her current height was just too short to reach it.

He was about to hand it to her, but seeing her face partly covered by wet hair, he simply plugged it in for her.

“Do you want… me to help you dry it?” he asked.

Su Moyu lowered her raised hand. “Sure, I guess. Let’s go to the room, I want to sit.”

Bai Shuchuan followed her to the room. She sat in front of the dressing table, looking at herself in the mirror, and a small smile appeared on her face.

“My hair sticking to my face like this looks so ugly.”

Her tone sounded lively, and Bai Shuchuan’s mood improved a little.

“It’s not that bad,” he said, turning on the hair dryer.

“Do you even know how to dry hair?” Su Moyu asked.

Hearing her question, he turned the dryer off again.

“I kind of know. You dry the roots first, then blow the sides in one direction,” he explained.

This time, Su Moyu was really surprised.

“How do you know so much?” she teased.

“I saw it in videos and paid attention,” Bai Shuchuan said calmly.

She frowned. “That doesn’t seem like something you’d watch.”

“I thought it might be useful,” he replied, then turned the dryer back on and gently lifted her hair.

Su Moyu sat still like a well-behaved child, looking at herself in the mirror and feeling his careful, gentle movements.
