Chapter 269: A Father in a Bad Mood
Her sister’s schoolwork was not good.
She was only in her first year of middle school, yet her grades were already at the “just passing is good enough” level. Her English was a little better, but not by much.
Her father was the type who had no patience, so even at home he never helped the sister with homework. He was afraid she would make him so angry he’d get sick.
Her mother was out buying vegetables, so An Han had to help today.
Her sister sat at the computer desk in the living room, while An Han sat lazily beside her, resting her face on her hand, watching her sister copy homework with full focus.
There were answer sheets at the back of the winter vacation workbook. Her sister tore out the answers, looked nervously toward the front door, worried that their mother might suddenly come back, and quickly copied everything.
An Han had no problem with this. Back then, she didn’t even do winter or summer homework at all.
When school started, she just handed in blank books, teachers didn’t check them anyway.
Their mother didn’t care much about An Han’s studies back then. She left everything to after-school tutoring and only hoped An Han wouldn’t cause trouble at school. But with the little sister, she became very strict about studying.
“Sister, can you help me write some?”
“Then you might as well not write at all.”
“Really? You can help?”
Seeing her hopeful eyes made An Han’s blood pressure rise. She paused, then said with a crooked mouth, “As long as you’re not afraid Mom will spank you.”
“……” her sister said nothing and continued copying.
No idea how things were going between Su Peng and her mother. He was probably being tested in a gentle-but-dangerous way under her mother’s “kind smile.”
An Han yawned, just then the sound of footsteps came from the stairs.
Her father had finally woken up, but he still looked tired. Rubbing his eyes, hair messy, pajamas wrinkled, he slowly walked downstairs.
He must not have slept well last night. Normally, even if he didn’t go out, he would still keep himself neat and tidy, not like this.
“Dad, breakfast is on the table.”
He peeked into the living room, glanced at his two daughters, nodded, and walked toward the table with a heavy heart.
“An Han, we’re going to your grandpa’s house this afternoon for New Year visits. Get ready in advance.”
“Okay.”
Their close relatives on her mother’s side already knew her situation, so going there wouldn’t be too awkward. Besides, there was also the big news about her cousin dating someone, so she wouldn’t be the main focus.
An Han wondered if she should bring the system items with her. Maybe she could show them to the female relatives when no men were around.
That way there would be a reasonable explanation for her turning into a girl and she could even grow her hair longer.
If her hair grew suddenly, she could just tell her parents that Su Peng took her to get hair extensions. And if she cut it again, she could even sell the hair for some money.
She still preferred having longer hair. Su Peng liked long hair more, and she herself felt her short hair was too boyish.
Before, she thought short hair looked cool, handsome and pretty. But somehow that feeling became weaker and weaker.
Maybe because her family finally accepted her? Her old male mindset had been pushed deeper and deeper, especially after meeting Lin Yue.
Her sister finally finished copying the ten pages. An Han immediately got up and went upstairs. She couldn’t stay beside her sister even one more second.
She didn’t mind people copying homework, she had done worse herself.
But her sister copying answers was one thing, copying ten pages in half an hour, and in handwriting that looked like ghost symbols…
One glance, and she couldn’t read a single word. If their mother saw her sister’s homework, she would probably press her down and spank her for two whole minutes.
Now An Han finally understood why their mother’s temper kept getting worse, it was all because her sister constantly made her angry.
She slipped off her shoes like she was escaping and went upstairs. But halfway up, she suddenly stopped, held the railing, and looked down at her father with curiosity all over her face.
“Dad, how did you win Mom’s heart back then?”
Her father already looked uneasy, and after hearing her question, his face instantly darkened.
He looked up at An Han’s pretty face and couldn’t bring himself to scold her. After hesitating for a moment, he answered, “We liked each other. How else do you think it happened?”
“I heard Mom say Grandpa didn’t like you at first?”
He straightened up like an old-fashioned dad and said, “Stop gossiping about my business. You and that brat aren’t finished yet!”
“Oh…”
Even though she had been getting along well with her father lately, he had been away from home for years. Once he put on his strict face, she couldn’t act playful with him like she did with her mother.
Her neck shrank like a scared turtle, and she ran upstairs.
Why be so fierce…
If you don’t want to say it, then don’t say it.
Her father was clearly in a bad mood today. Even yesterday, when Su Peng came over, he hadn’t looked this annoyed.
She only took a few steps before hearing a car outside. She stopped and peeked down toward the front door from the stairs.
A moment later, Su Peng walked in carrying a big bag of things. Her father’s face grew even darker, his eyes cold as he looked at him.
Su Peng was obviously nervous, afraid he’d really get his legs broken and be thrown out. He quickly placed the bag on the floor and looked toward his future mother-in-law behind him.
“Auntie, I put the things down. I’ll get going?”
“What are you rushing for? Stay for lunch.”
Her mother checked the time, it was 10 a.m. If she started cooking now, lunch would be ready around 11 or 12.
“Let him stay again?” Her father finally spoke. “After lunch, aren’t we going to visit family?”
“What does that have to do with having one more person at the table?”
Mother happily opened the big plastic bag. Inside were many small bags of prepared food.
Su Peng hesitated, but under her father’s murderous stare, he moved forward and said, “Auntie, let me help you with the cooking.”
“Sure.”
Looks like her mother and Su Peng were getting along well~
But her father looked like he wanted to swallow Su Peng alive…
Noticing Su Peng’s cheerful look, he turned to see An Han peeking from the staircase with only her head sticking out. He gave her a confident smile.
She gave him a thumbs-up in return, but then her father suddenly turned his head toward her, and she rushed upstairs like a startled rabbit.
What did Su Peng even do? Just one veggie-shopping trip and he already got along with her mom so well~
Humming happily, An Han went back to her room, opened her wardrobe, planning to change into something prettier.
But she froze.
Su Peng… helping in the kitchen… wasn’t that usually a disaster?
He might be good at everything else, but housework, especially kitchen work, he was unbelievably bad.
Suddenly anxious, she rushed to the third-floor hallway and leaned over to look downstairs.
The dining table was directly below the stairs, and she could see her father sitting there with a gloomy expression. She could also faintly hear her mother’s helpless voice from the kitchen.
“You just… pick the vegetables first.”
“Remove the bad leaves, that’s all. Then wash them.”
“…Maybe you should go watch TV instead?”
