Volume 1 Chapter 59: Magical Girls Are Nothing Special Either
Seeing Amber suddenly appear, the girl shrank back even more. But when she carefully looked at the blonde girl in front of her, a small hope lit up in her eyes. She asked again in a weak voice.
“Big sister… you are a magical girl, right? I saw magical girls on TV, and they all dress like you.”
“Yes, I am a magical girl,” Amber nodded. “A magical girl who protects the world.”
She knelt down beside the little girl with a gentle smile, showing the kind face of a magical girl.
“So don’t worry, you are safe now. Are you injured? What happened here?”
Even while speaking kindly, Amber did not fully relax. As the girl carefully looked at her, Amber’s golden eyes were also checking the girl closely.
After what she saw last night with the disaster beast illusions, Amber was worried this could be another trap set by monsters. After all, meeting a little girl in a place like this was already very strange.
“I see… big sister really is a magical girl…” the girl said. Her tired eyes gained a little light, and her voice became a bit happier.
Mm… she does not have the strange energy of monsters or disaster beasts. She is probably not a fake.
After confirming the girl was truly human and seeing the relief in her eyes, Amber slowly lowered her guard. The light in her golden eyes faded.
“Um… magical girl big sister…?”
Seeing Amber suddenly go quiet, the girl carefully called out again in a weak voice.
“Yes, I’m here. It’s okay now. I am a magical girl, I will protect you.”
Amber snapped back to attention and gently lifted the girl, helping her sit on the bed.
“But if I don’t know what happened, I can’t defeat the bad guys. So can you tell me what happened here?”
She kept her voice soft so she would not scare the girl.
“Did monsters break into your home? Where are the other people in this building?”
Hearing this, the girl’s eyes turned red again. Her voice began to shake, and fear filled her expression.
She hugged her shoulders tightly while crying.
“I-I don’t know… my mom and dad said they had to work overtime, so they didn’t come home… then those monsters suddenly rushed in and started breaking everything in the house…”
“I didn’t know what to do at all! I thought about asking the neighbors for help… but I was too scared to run out, so I just hid under the bed and waited for them to leave…”
“I don’t know how long I was hiding… and then I saw big sister standing in front of me…”
Seeing the girl curled up in the corner of the bed, looking lost and helpless, Amber, who was not very good at comforting people, could only pat her head gently.
“It’s okay now… I’m here, those monsters can’t hurt you anymore.”
If all of this was an illusion, then it was far too real. Even last night, that weak “water jellyfish” monster could only create cheap illusions using human memories.
And this girl looks only about eight or nine years old… going through something like this is just too sad.
But maybe this is exactly why I chose to become a magical girl. I don’t want tragedies like this to happen again.
Amber nodded to herself.
She carefully checked the room again to make sure no vampires were hiding inside. After confirming it was safe, she closed the door, pulled a chair over, and sat in front of the girl.
“Earlier when I went upstairs, I saw that the other apartments were all tightly closed. Are the other residents not home?”
Right now, this girl is the only one she can talk to normally. Maybe she is the key to this case. Amber would not miss this chance.
“I think… they should not all be away?” the girl said with a troubled look. “But many of the adults here work at construction sites, so they often come home late.”
“At construction sites? But it’s still strange that the whole building is empty… and only this girl is here.”
Too strange. All the doors were tightly closed, except this girl’s home… but for some reason, the vampires did not hurt her. They only destroyed her house.
Amber frowned, but she also knew clearly that even if she kept asking, this little girl probably wouldn’t know much. She sighed and changed the topic.
“Is that so. Then what about your parents? You said they were working overtime… what do they do for work?”
This was what interested her most. If those vampires went to such trouble to break into this girl’s house… there must be some important files to destroy.
“Work… I’m not really sure. I only know that my mom and dad work at the mental hospital in Wangdu…”
“Mental hospital?” Amber’s eyes lit up. She quickly cut in, “Do you mean the Wangdu Emotional Disorder Care Center?”
“I-I think so? My parents work at that mental hospital outside the city. They usually come home very late…”
The girl’s face turned pale. She spoke carefully and softly, looking guilty for not being able to give more useful information. Her voice got lower and lower, until she finally lowered her head completely.
“I’m sorry, big sister. I really only know this much. My parents don’t talk to me about their work…”
Seeing this, Amber gently patted the girl’s head again and said softly,
“It’s okay. It’s already enough that you told me this much.”
Although this little girl didn’t know much… from the torn documents and the fact that her parents worked at that mental hospital, the place outside the city must have a problem.
Wait… outside the city?
Amber froze for a moment. She suddenly thought of something else. Yesterday, that strange “jellyfish” monster had also been hiding in an amusement park outside the city!
Amusement park… mental hospital… both are outside the city. Are they connected? Or just a coincidence?
“Maybe these events are really related… but I don’t have enough clues yet to see the connection…”
Amber frowned for a while but still couldn’t figure it out. In the end, she shook her head and smiled at the girl.
“Forget it. Thinking about it now won’t help. I’ll take you out of here first. After that, the Special Investigation Department adults will handle things.”
The vampires nearby have all been taken care of… there shouldn’t be any left. The rest can be left to the Special Investigation Department.
Even though she still felt a bit uneasy, those people should be able to handle this kind of case… right?
I still have work tomorrow…
Amber thought to herself.
“Okay. I’ll listen to you, big sister.”
The girl nodded obediently. But after Amber stood up, she suddenly looked hesitant again. After a long pause, she gently grabbed the corner of Amber’s clothes.
“Um…”
“Hm? What is it?”
Amber turned back in confusion.
“Well…”
The girl opened her mouth, hesitating for a long time before finally speaking in a small voice:
“Tonight… I saw, outside the window, that purple magical girl who often appears on TV…”
“That magical girl big sister looked like she was searching for something, but couldn’t find it… after she left, those monsters showed up…”
Fear appeared again in the girl’s eyes. Her body started to tremble slightly.
“You mean… Amethyst was here too? Looking for something?”
Amber looked at her in disbelief. She quickly walked to the window and stared at the dark night outside, her expression changing slightly.
That magical girl… she came here first… and then those monsters showed up right after?
This…
Just as Amber was looking out the window, the fear on the girl’s face suddenly disappeared completely.
In the darkness, one of her eyeballs slowly slipped out of its socket.
Using her right hand, she calmly pushed the eyeball back into place, then slowly showed a twisted smile.
“Hehe… magical girls are pretty easy to fool, huh… hehe…”
