Volume 1 Chapter 75: If You Do Bad Things, You Will Pay for Them Sooner or Later
Late at night, on the top floor of Liu Li’s construction company building.
Even though it was the middle of summer, strong wind kept rushing past from time to time, hitting the rooftop windows hard and making rough, sad sounds.
Liu Li suddenly opened her eyes from a half-awake state. She quickly looked around, and even her breathing became fast.
The night wind came through the window that had not been fully closed. Together with the cold moonlight, it gave people a chilling feeling.
“What the hell... I clearly told someone to close the window...”
“It was sunny this afternoon. Why does it look like it’s going to rain again?”
Liu Li looked outside the window. In the dark night sky, she could vaguely see black clouds, as if a heavy storm was coming.
The sudden weather change made her feel uneasy. She had a strange feeling that something was about to happen.
Still cursing, Liu Li went to close the window.
Was the air conditioner set too cold?
The whole building was brightly lit, but the cold wind that passed from time to time and the silent emptiness around her made everything feel unreal, like she was still inside a dream.
A strange fear spread through her body.
She walked out of the office without thinking. Her footsteps echoed on the smooth marble floor. Every step felt like it was stepping on her own heartbeat.
Did all the people downstairs leave?
When did they leave?
I never told them they could get off work!
The clock on the wall ticked loudly.
Liu Li moved between rows of empty desks. On every desk were neatly placed folders and office supplies. Even the tea cups on the desks were still giving off steam, as if the workers had only stepped away for a moment and would return at any time.
But in the whole building, other than Liu Li herself, there was no sign of anyone else.
“What kind of hell is this?!”
Could it be some foolish weirdo causing trouble in my company?
Don’t these people know I have an agreement with that person?
Or is that person doing another experiment again?
But she promised to keep me safe!
“My lord, did you send someone here? If there is a problem, come out and speak clearly to me!”
Liu Li’s slightly shaking voice echoed through the empty building.
But other than her own echo and the sound of wind blowing now and then, nothing answered her.
There was only dead silence everywhere.
Her steps became more hurried.
The portraits hanging on both sides of the hallway seemed to be staring at her with empty eyes, making her feel like needles were on her back.
She kept comforting herself in her heart.
This was only a small misunderstanding.
Or maybe she was still dreaming and had not truly woken up yet.
But the creepy feeling only became stronger.
Even though there were no other workers here, Liu Li felt as if a pair of invisible eyes were quietly watching every move she made from some hidden corner.
“My lord, stop scaring me and come out already!”
Liu Li suddenly turned around, trying to find the owner of those eyes.
But the huge company still gave no answer.
The busy noise from earlier work hours now felt fake.
Looking around the building now, there was nothing moving anywhere.
It was so quiet that even a falling needle could be heard.
She pushed open office door after office door.
But every room was empty.
Only computers that were still on and files carelessly placed aside cast long shadows under the lights.
The whole company...
Only I am left here?
An indescribable fear exploded in her mind.
She quickly took out her phone and called several numbers one after another.
But as expected, every call only said to try again later.
A normal person would have chosen to run out of the building at once.
But Liu Li, as if she had gone mad, ran back toward her own office instead.
Too many things were hidden inside this office that could never be shown to others.
Cash, account books, and secret files were all stored here.
It could be said that everything Liu Li owned was inside this room.
With that powerful person secretly helping her from behind, she trusted this place even more than her own home.
She locked the office door.
The weak little lock should not have meant much, but at this moment it gave her a strong sense of safety.
That person clearly said it before...
Clearly said they would keep me safe!
Now Liu Li’s scalp felt numb, and thoughts like this kept repeating in her mind.
But...
The small bit of reason left in her heart, along with the experience she had gained after many years in business, told her the truth.
Most likely, she had already been abandoned by that person.
To that powerful figure, someone like her was worthless. Just a chess piece that could be thrown away at any time.
Liu Li was not stupid. Of course she understood all of this.
But back then, she had nothing. She faced endless debt and enemies waiting to tear her apart.
Other than accepting that person’s offer, what other choice did she have?
If you live by dirty means, sooner or later you must pay the price...
She should have understood long ago that money like this was never easy to earn.
Over the years, to gain that person’s trust and favor, she had done many shameful things.
At first, guilt made her nervous and afraid.
But later, as her status rose higher and higher, and endless wealth flowed into her pockets, her careful attitude slowly became numb.
But...
Just yesterday, that person had sent her a photo of the Bai family’s young lady and told her to act when the chance came.
So why today...?
Before this, that person had never shown any dissatisfaction toward her.
Liu Li suddenly noticed something was wrong.
After calming down little by little, she stumbled to the computer in the office and opened the building’s security cameras.
She knew the business she did in secret was illegal and shameful.
So besides the normal cameras everyone could see, there were also many hidden cameras.
She wanted to know, if this was not because of that person, then who was causing trouble behind her back?
Liu Li opened tonight’s recordings and began to watch carefully.
But to her disappointment, the workers on the screen looked as busy as usual.
Nothing strange happened.
No one made any suspicious move.
Everything looked completely normal.
So normal that Liu Li began to doubt her own feelings.
“No, no! If nothing happened, there’s no way all these people would leave without a sound! Something must be wrong!”
She increased the video speed.
A sharp light flashed in her eyes as she tried to find out when the employees had left.
But before she even watched half of it, a bright white flash suddenly burst across the screen, forcing Liu Li to close her eyes.
When she opened them again, she saw a scene that froze her blood.
A pair of slender hands wearing silk gloves, pale almost to the point of being transparent, reached straight out from the computer screen toward her!
“!!!”
Liu Li stepped back in terror, but her feet felt nailed to the floor. She could not move even a little.
A strange icy feeling rushed toward her.
She wanted to scream, but her voice was stuck in her throat.
She could not say a single word.
“Hello there~ You must be Boss Liu, right? I’ve heard so much about you~”
Along with the light laugh of a young girl, a violent explosion suddenly erupted.
A wave of burning heat instantly swallowed Liu Li whole.
The next moment, her mind fell into darkness.
