Chapter 49: I Can Do It
The voices above the cave entrance came even closer.
“What a damn pest. Can’t he just die properly? Why did he run this far?”
“I’ll call Mr. Jiang again and give him an update.”
This time, Mu Yi heard everything clearly. She widened her eyes and looked at Gu Zhiren. Thinking back to everything before the car crash, she slowly realized it had not been an accident at all.
Someone had caused it on purpose.
Now that she knew those people were targeting Gu Zhiren, and that they were already very close, Mu Yi pressed her lips tightly together.
If this continued, both of them would definitely be found!
Her ankle was injured, and Gu Zhiren was weak after hitting his head. Neither of them could fight the two men outside. Once discovered, neither of them would escape!
Fear spread through her chest. Her heart beat wildly.
But in the next moment, her eyes suddenly lit up.
Not far beside Gu Zhiren, she spotted an old broken pinwheel stuck in the ground.
At once, memories from the past rushed into her mind like rising seawater.
Her emotions became especially intense.
Then she noticed something else beside the pinwheel, two large bamboo baskets. One was broken and only half remained, while the other was still complete.
A sudden idea flashed through Mu Yi’s mind.
And she grabbed onto it instantly.
The voices above kept getting closer. Gu Zhiren carefully covered the girl’s mouth while desperately thinking of a solution.
Of course, he wanted both of them to escape safely.
But if he had to choose between the two of them, one lives and one dies…
He hoped Mu Yi would survive.
Suddenly, the girl pointed toward the direction beside him, signaling for him to look. Gu Zhiren turned his head without hesitation and slightly raised his eyes.
A strange emotion appeared in them, and he frowned.
He never expected to return to that dark cave again.
And this time, the same person was still beside him.
The voices above came even closer, but Mu Yi noticed that Gu Zhiren had strangely frozen in place. Feeling speechless, she lightly patted his shoulder.
Gu Zhiren snapped back to his senses. He saw the girl point at herself and use gestures to say that she wanted to go pick something up. Since there was no time to waste, he immediately released his hand.
Then he watched the girl crawl over on all fours and pick up the two baskets.
Gu Zhiren sharply noticed that her left ankle seemed injured. Watching her quietly as she returned, the softness and pity in his eyes quickly became impossible to hide.
Silently, he raised his hand and gently fixed the snowy hair hanging in front of her forehead.
Mu Yi blankly lifted her gaze.
Under the weak and dim light, her dusty little face seemed to gain a faint blush.
But in those clear eyes, there was also obvious fear and resistance.
Gu Zhiren naturally assumed she was afraid of the people outside. Because of that, his eyes filled with even more gentleness and regret.
He knew this time he had dragged her into trouble again.
If he had known that getting close to her would only bring her danger, then he would rather have never met her again.
Now he truly regretted contacting her.
Even after she hated him that much, he still stubbornly refused to walk away.
“Hey, over here! There’s a hole here. Do you think they fell down below?”
A man’s voice suddenly rang out.
Gu Zhiren instantly pushed aside all his thoughts. He swallowed lightly, and every emotion disappeared from his eyes. Only caution and alertness remained on his face.
Mu Yi also snapped back to reality, though she lowered her head as if embarrassed.
She immediately put down the broken basket, then raised the good basket and handed it to Gu Zhiren.
Without a single word, with only one look, Gu Zhiren understood what she planned to do.
And he trusted her completely.
But just as he took the basket, the girl suddenly opened her arms.
Without any hesitation, she threw herself into his embrace.
As the girl pressed tightly against him, Gu Zhiren instantly felt a huge softness pushing against his chest. Her sweet scent filled his nose, and her small hands wrapped around his back.
Gu Zhiren’s expression changed slightly. He pressed his lips together, and the hand holding the big basket unconsciously tightened.
At the same time, the men above had already turned on a flashlight.
The beam of light shined deep into the cave. Dust floated in the bright light, and a large circle of light landed at the bottom of the cave, lighting up the surroundings.
The flashlight kept moving around stubbornly, searching again and again.
But no one could be seen below.
“There’s nobody here. Damn it, where did they go?”
“Let’s search somewhere else!”
As the voices faded away, the flashlight beam slowly disappeared, and the cave gradually returned to darkness and silence.
Inside the intact bamboo basket, Gu Zhiren’s hand finally got what it wanted and gently touched the girl’s head.
He could clearly hear two loud heartbeats.
Compared to his own, Mu Yi’s heartbeat was much louder.
The person in his arms was trembling slightly, but he temporarily assumed she was simply scared of the people outside.
He lowered his eyes and glanced down, only to unexpectedly notice that the girl’s neck and ears had turned red.

He already knew the people above had left, but Gu Zhiren still did not want to let her go yet.
His eyes slowly closed.
After a while, Mu Yi quietly asked, “I think they already left?”
But Gu Zhiren did not reply.
After waiting for a moment, Mu Yi realized something was wrong. She immediately lifted the basket.
“Gu Zhiren?!”
Seeing his face become even paler, Mu Yi’s pupils shrank. She quickly checked his breathing, then pressed her ear against his chest to listen to his heartbeat.
“There’s still breathing and a heartbeat. Thank goodness… looks like he only fainted.”
After confirming he was still alive, she finally let out a sigh of relief.
Then she looked up toward the cave entrance.
Her ankle was only sprained, so she could still wait. But Gu Zhiren could not. If they delayed any longer, he might really die.
At that time, how sad would his family be?
No, more importantly, with her current situation, she absolutely could not face the police!
She could not let herself be discovered.
Otherwise, she might become some scientist’s research subject. Maybe she would even be locked up and turned into some breeding machine!
Mu Yi forced herself to calm down and carefully thought things through.
Her bag, phone, Gu Zhiren’s luggage, and his phone were all still in the car. Right now, she could not rely on anyone.
She could only find a way to get Gu Zhiren out of here first.
So she frowned and thought with all her strength.
After a while, Mu Yi took a deep breath with a disgusted expression. Her trembling hands reached toward Gu Zhiren’s belt. She removed it, then turned around and carried him onto her back before tying his hands together with the belt.
To be safe, she pressed her lips together, removed her own belt as well, and tightened the binding around his hands even more.
“I can do this. Mu Yi, you’re the best!”
Clenching her small fists, Mu Yi encouraged herself. She widened her eyes and puffed up her cheeks, while silently hoping she would not run into those two men again on the way.
But if her luck was terrible and she really met them again, then there was no helping it…
She would just have to bluff her way through!
As for exactly what to do, she would think about it later. Thinking too much now would not help anyway!
“Let’s go.”
She took a deep breath, but the moment she stepped forward, pain suddenly shot through her injured ankle.
Mu Yi gritted her teeth.
She turned her head and looked at Gu Zhiren a few times, then could not help muttering,
“When you wake up, you have to make a deal with me. If I get first place in the monthly rankings, then you stop bothering me forever, got it?”
Honestly, she really wanted to just throw him away and leave him behind…
