Chapter 56: Keeping a Promise
After breakfast, Mu Yi prepared to go out with Mu Rufeng to buy some daily necessities.
Because she had no legal identity, she could only avoid the police. And she truly could not continue writing her novel anymore.
At most, she could only use her father’s ID card to create a small alternate account and start writing a new novel.
She believed that before long, people would come contact her father again, including informing her remarried mother that she had gone missing after the car accident.
From now on, she, Mu Yi, would become someone who could not appear openly in the light.
Mu Yi felt that it was unfair.
She had never committed any crime, yet now she could only hide herself everywhere.
Suppressing the grievance in her heart, Mu Yi changed into her shoes and casually spun her baseball cap in her hand. But when she followed her father downstairs, a black luxury car was parked below the building.
The driver’s door opened, and Gu Zhiren stepped out wearing a black shirt and black suit.
After slightly adjusting his clothes, he casually closed the car door. Then he raised his head and looked toward a certain direction, his gaze deep and thoughtful. His left hand unconsciously adjusted the cuff on his right sleeve.
He started walking toward the apartment entrance.
At the same time, inside the stairwell, Mu Yi was still spinning the cap on her finger, though she looked absent-minded.
But in the next second, the cap accidentally flew out of her hand toward the exit.
Mu Yi froze immediately.
Mu Rufeng reacted even faster and hurried after the cap.
The white baseball cap flew through the air…
Then suddenly, a large hand with distinct fingers appeared. The cap landed perfectly in that hand, lowering like a defeated prisoner.
Mu Rufeng instantly stopped in place.
Gu Zhiren slowly walked into view while lowering the hand holding the cap.
The moment Mu Rufeng clearly saw his face, he instantly realized who he was. He subconsciously turned to look at his child, only to see Mu Yi standing frozen with wide eyes.
Mu Rufeng frowned slightly but said nothing.
“You...”
An uncontrollable voice escaped from Mu Yi’s throat. She swallowed nervously, shock appearing on her pale face.
“What? Are you disappointed to see that I’m still alive?”
Gu Zhiren slightly raised his eyes and looked at Mu Yi with a teasing gaze, speaking gently.
Hearing this, Mu Yi simply pressed her lips together and did not want to answer.
Honestly speaking, she really disliked him. She should have wished for him to die right there in the hospital!
But if he had actually died, it would have caused her a huge headache. Too many things would have become involved. For example, the car accident investigation would definitely become much more serious, and her secret would absolutely be exposed.
And for some reason, she seemed to want him to stay alive even more.
Maybe because dying like that would have been too easy for him.
Yeah, that had to be the reason!!
Just as Mu Yi was about to stubbornly reply with something harsh, she suddenly noticed Mu Rufeng standing nearby.
Instantly, alarm bells rang inside her head.
No good.
In her father’s eyes, she was a well-behaved child. She could not act rude and unreasonable like this.
So she immediately swallowed the words that were almost about to burst out, casually nodded, curled her lips with a mix of dislike and helplessness, and answered with a smile.
“No, of course not. I really hoped you would be okay.”
Her unexpectedly gentle tone caused a slight change in Gu Zhiren’s eyes, making him think of many things.
But after only looking at her for a moment, Mu Rufeng coughed twice beside them to remind him of his presence.
Gu Zhiren first raised his hand and returned the baseball cap to Mu Yi, who had walked down the stairs.
After that, he thanked Mu Rufeng for what happened last night and exchanged some polite greetings with him.
Just as Gu Zhiren expected, Mu Rufeng shook his head and honestly explained that the person who truly saved him was not himself, but Mu Yi. He also described the situation from his own perspective.
The process was not exactly heroic enough to become a legend, but it still carried the feeling of someone desperately risking everything.
It was almost exactly the same as the scene Gu Zhiren had imagined afterward.
The truth proved that even though she had changed so much, the Mu Yi he knew had never disappeared.
He had simply been fooled by the disguise she showed on the surface and failed to see it clearly.
She was still the angel who had suddenly entered his life back in that July.
“No matter what, thank you very much, Uncle Mu.”
After saying that, Gu Zhiren adjusted his posture and looked directly at the embarrassed-looking Mu Yi.
Her expression looked as if she wanted to dig a hole in the ground and hide inside it.
Even though this was not something shameful at all. It was something worthy of praise and gratitude.
Taking in the girl’s shy and awkward appearance, Gu Zhiren slightly raised his brows. He could not help lowering his gaze to look at her left foot, concern and pity appearing in his eyes.
Using an injured ankle, she had carried a man taller and heavier than herself out of such a deep cave, then walked such a long distance all the way to the main road.
That was not the kind of determination an ordinary person could have.
He even wondered whether he himself could show that level of willpower.
“So you came here just to thank us?”
Hearing that, Gu Zhiren smiled lightly. He could already guess what she was about to say next.
“Today is already Wednesday. Didn’t you say before that you had something very important on Thursday, and that I absolutely had to take you back to Ganlan City? So I came to keep my promise.”
Without waiting for her to speak, Gu Zhiren directly got to the point.
Huh?
Something important on Thursday...
Mu Yi slowly realized what he meant. Her pupils shrank, she bit her lip, and suddenly felt it hard to breathe.
“Kid, go wait outside first. Dad has something he wants to discuss with Mr. Gu.”
Mu Rufeng suddenly spoke in a serious tone.
“Huh?”
Mu Yi’s eyelid twitched.
Then she saw Gu Zhiren smiling faintly, calmly and confidently looking toward Mu Rufeng while adjusting his sleeve cuff.
“Perfect timing. I also have something I want to discuss with Uncle Mu.”
“......”
Mu Yi was shocked.
What are you two going to talk about? Why can’t I stay here!?
…………………………
After going outside, Mu Yi glanced a few times at Gu Zhiren’s car, puffed up her cheeks unhappily, then slowly squatted down on the ground.
She wrapped her arms around her legs, rested her chin on her knees, and pouted.
Thinking back to what Gu Zhiren had just mentioned, she could not help sighing while frowning.
Little Chubby’s birthday celebration...
It felt like there was no reason for her to go anymore, and she did not even know how to face him.
Mu Yi wanted to cancel it.
She needed to come up with a proper excuse first!
“Wait, my phone is gone, and I can’t even remember his QQ number.”
Mu Yi felt bitter inside.
But…
Wasn’t this also an excuse?
She nodded to herself repeatedly. For one brief moment, she even felt thankful for her current situation.
She waited and waited outside until her legs became numb. Eventually, she even started drawing circles on the ground with her finger.
Cursing Gu Zhiren while she waited.
Just when she could no longer endure it and stood up to stretch her body, Gu Zhiren and Mu Rufeng finally walked out together.
“Mmm...”
Mu Yi lightly placed her hands on her waist and suspiciously looked back and forth between the two men.
Then she looked at Gu Zhiren and showed a gentle smile.
“......”
Seeing Mu Yi suddenly smile, Gu Zhiren lowered his eyes slightly, wearing an expression that clearly said, ‘Feel free to make your move anytime. I’ll gladly accept it.’
“Dad, I also~”
Mu Yi deliberately dragged out the final word and lengthened the tone. Then she tilted her head with an innocent expression and said,
“Want to talk with him alone too.”
