Chapter 139: Blood Wolf Breakthrough

“Come on, drink! Wilson, don’t tell me you’re already drunk after one cup. Maybe next life you should sit at the kids’ table.”

“I’m not… keep going…”

The people at the next table were still raising their glasses, completely unaware that danger was slowly getting closer.

Before anyone could react, a shadow outside suddenly sped up. In an instant, a blood-red wolf-like monster slammed against the glass at the shop entrance.

Its sharp, blood-stained fangs stared fiercely at the diners inside.

A sharp breaking sound rang out, the window shattered. Before the shocked customers could understand what happened, a human head dropped to the ground with a dull thud.

The rest of the people froze in fear.

Just as the blood wolf was about to choose its next target, Karl grabbed a chair nearby and smashed it hard onto the wolf’s head, leaving a deep hole in its skull.

“If you want to live, get out now. Don’t just stand there like idiots.”

Karl threw the chair aside. Seeing the wolf was not fully dead, she stepped forward and delivered another blow. The others, seeing this, ran away in panic.

After checking the wounds and confirming the wolf was knocked unconscious, Karl carried the wolf’s body over to the waiter.

“Keep my drink sealed. I’ll come back tomorrow to finish it.”

“Y-yes… we’ll give you a new bottle then. Also, I’ll report this to the manager. From now on, your meals here will be free.”

The waiter stuttered. Even though he was still scared, he knew that without Karl, the whole place might have been destroyed.

“Alright then. I’ll go. Make sure you explain it clearly to your boss, don’t lose your job because of this.”

After saying that, Karl carried the wolf through the streets. People nearby saw her and quickly avoided her.

Karl sighed. She knew this couldn’t go on like this, so she changed direction and headed toward a residential area.

At first, she was stopped by a guard, but after showing her ID, she was allowed in.

Dragging the blood wolf behind her, Karl arrived at her sister’s door. After knocking a few times, the closed door opened.

A small head peeked out. When Maya saw Karl, her expression changed from surprise to shock. She stood there, frozen.

“Sister, why are you here? And what is that body you’re carrying?”

“I’m on a mission. This thing isn’t fully dead yet. Do you have a place inside?”

“If it’s a magical beast, we can put it in the storage room. I’ll take you there. But if it’s not dead, won’t it escape?”

“Isn’t that what you’re here for? Just use some kind of mental control and make it unable to move for a while.”

“This… where did you even get this? And why is it a wolf?”

Maya suddenly remembered. Earlier, Peiya had guessed that a demon wolf attacked the guild. And now her sister had brought back another wolf.

Could this really just be a coincidence?

“What wolf?”

“Earlier tonight, a wolf also attacked the Adventurers’ Guild. We’re investigating it right now.”

“Really? That’s quite a coincidence. Then maybe this is the same one. I caught it while investigating the Beast Tamer Association. Didn’t expect it to ruin my meal.”

Karl paused, then added,

“Do you have any more meat at home? I’m still not full.”

“Yes, but let’s handle this first. You said this came from the Beast Tamer Association?”

“Yes. Someone from the Beast Tamer Association is researching a way to revive demon wolves. This wolf is proof, it’s one of their failed test subjects.”

Karl said it casually as she put the wolf on the clean floor. At that moment, Maya stepped forward and used magic to restrain the struggling wolf. The creature, which had been fierce just now, slowly calmed down.

“Alright. I’ll cook you some meat. How many days are you planning to stay this time?”

“I don’t know. There’s way too much going on in the kingdom. Who knows when they’ll be done.”

Karl took a sip of tea, threw off her coat, and happily grabbed some snacks from the table.

“Sis, what have you been through out there? You look starving.”

Maya was still wearing her pajamas, completely different from her sister, who worked as an intelligence agent.

To be honest, Maya still couldn’t understand why her sister chose that job.

Back then, Karl used to fight in underground boxing matches. Someone like her, who relied on strength, ended up becoming an intelligence agent.

Wasn’t she afraid she’d just beat information out of suspects instead of properly investigating?

“What food could I even get on the road? I’ve been tracking this big target for so long, getting proper sleep was already a luxury. And this is only a test subject. If we act too soon, we’ll just alert them. I’ve also been out of contact with headquarters for too long, and our analyst still hasn’t arrived…”

“...Maya, do you know any scholars who are loyal to you and also strong? I’m good at fighting, but not at analyzing things. While this wolf is still alive, I need to get some useful information out of it. Test subjects like this usually have brain damage and won’t live long. If I just keep it here, this opportunity will be wasted.”

Hearing her sister complain, Maya sighed.

“Then why don’t you study more? Basic knowledge about magical creatures should be something an intelligence agent needs, right?”

“Study? I can’t focus on books. If I could, I wouldn’t be sitting here like this.”

“Alright… If you’re talking about scholars, I do know someone. But I’m not sure I can invite her.”

Karl paused for a moment. “Someone even you can’t invite? Don’t tell me it’s someone from the Holy Academy. Those old scholars are all arrogant. If I have to ask them for help, I’d rather not go.”

“No, not them.”

Maya smiled slightly. “She’s not from the Holy Academy, but people there are trying to recruit her. Do you want to meet someone like that?”

“Someone like that exists?” Karl laughed, playing with a dice in her hand, clearly interested. “Of course I want to meet her. I’ve traveled all over and haven’t seen many people who can make those old scholars change their attitude. If she’s that important, there’s no reason not to meet her. It’s just a pity, I didn’t bring any gifts.”

“No need. She’ll probably be very interested in that blood wolf.”

“I see. I’ve been worrying about how to write my report lately. This makes things easier.”

“Mm-hmm. But when the time comes, try to tone down your ‘Western Region’ vibe a bit. Don’t scare her.”

Maya reminded her kindly. Standing together, their styles were very different. Karl had the look of someone from the Southern region, but she was actually from the Western Regions.

“Got it. I know my limits. Let me know when she’s about to arrive. As for a gift… I don’t have much, but I can give her some recent intelligence about witches. Scholars like her should be interested in strange things like that.”
