Chapter 140: Karl Is Quite a Character
“Sis, don’t tell me you’re going to tell those old stories again?”
Maya joked as she handed over a freshly grilled steak.
“Tch… this is real information, okay? It’s first-hand news related to the Eternal Night Witch.”
Karl took a bite of fatty meat, chewing as she tapped the table.
“Those old guys… I feel like they’re about to take action. So I have some information they discarded earlier and passed to me.”
“Aren’t you worried about confidentiality rules?”
“What confidentiality rules? That’s just something to fool the king. A lot of this information has already spread, it’s just that you don’t know.”
Karl wiped the grease from her hands and stretched her fingers.
“Compared to others, I’ve actually kept things pretty secret. After all, I don’t really have friends to share it with. And those nobles see my muscles and lose interest in buying information from me.”
“That’s not a bad thing. Being bothered by them wouldn’t bring anything good.”
Maya opened a bottle of drink by the table and glanced at Karl, who was struggling to figure out how to open a pull-tab can. She walked over and pressed the tab with her finger to show her.
“How long has it been since you came back? This is a pull-tab soda. Don’t tell me you forgot. Did drinking too much alcohol mess up your brain?”
Karl had a habit of drinking, everyone knew that. Maya didn’t bother hiding it and said it directly.
Karl’s face turned a bit awkward, her neck slightly red. After hesitating for a while, she nodded.
“Come on, it’s just drinking a little. Life is so boring, without alcohol, I wouldn’t even know how I’d survive.”
She skillfully took out a bottle of wheat drink from under the table and proudly showed it to her sister. She knew Maya used to hide drinks there for her when they were younger.
She didn’t expect that after so many years, her sister still kept that habit.
“Drink less. I’m worried one day you’ll pass out on the street and no one will even recognize you.”
“I don’t get drunk.”
Karl finished a whole bottle, let out a satisfied burp, and then lay down on the table and fell asleep.
Maya held her forehead, brought over a blanket, and covered her. She felt a bit troubled by her sister’s personality.
But… maybe this straightforward attitude was what made her who she was.
…………………………
The next morning, Peiya went to the Adventurers’ Guild to look for materials to make the ring.
As soon as she entered, before she could speak, President Maya asked first,
“You’re here early today. Do you have time?”
Maya smiled mysteriously. That smile alone almost scared Peiya.
Did Maya get replaced by someone else?
Peiya was about to run, but noticed Maya had already walked closer.
“It’s something serious. I promise you won’t lose anything. Totally trustworthy.”
This…
The problem is… you don’t even look like someone innocent.
Maya didn’t look old, but calling her cute or childlike didn’t fit at all. At most, she looked like a dignified young woman.
Compared to those charming, attractive teacher types you see on TV, she was completely different. If she was trying to use charm on Peiya, that would be quite unrealistic.
Peiya looked at Maya’s expression and guessed that she had probably run into a problem that was hard to solve.
Peiya adjusted her breathing and waved her hand.
“If there’s something, just say it directly. There’s no need to act like this. As long as the payment is fair, it’s fine.”
“Thank you so much, Miss Peiya. Actually, my sister wants to ask you to help examine a demon test subject. It’s also related to the Beast Tamer Association. My sister works for the kingdom’s intelligence organization. I know it’s not good to involve you in this, and I’m really sorry. Next time there’s a chance, I’ll definitely give you more rewards in future cooperation.”
Maya kept praising and promising benefits until Peiya nodded and agreed. Only then did she stop.
“I thought you were an only child. So you also have a sister.”
“Yeah. I used to live in the Western Regions. People here in the Central Plains don’t really like learning mind magic, but where we lived, there were many snakes. So in the early days, there were many so-called ‘shamans’ in the village. Later, I found out they were actually mind-type mages. They could control snakes, and they used those snakes to scare villagers and make money from them.”
“Wow, that’s really bad. Then why did you decide to learn mind magic? Could it be that you—”
Maya quickly waved her hands. “I’m not interested in tricking people for money. It’s because our village was too remote. Later, my father took me to the city to build a better life. With our knowledge of spices, and by supplying materials to soldiers during wartime, we were given a small noble title by the king. After that, I didn’t really want to go back.”
As Maya talked about the past, her eyes shone brightly.
“But my sister is different. She’s the eldest child, and our parents hoped she would achieve something greater, so they were stricter with her. After she left home, she traveled to many places. Later, I heard she even fought in underground boxing matches. That’s when she caught the attention of high-ranking officials in the kingdom.”
“She didn’t rely on the family at all. She became an honorary noble through her own strength. I was really surprised when I found out. Compared to her, my path was much easier. I just benefited from my parents’ efforts and lived a stable life.”
“I see. Actually, President Maya, you and your sister both worked very hard. You must have a lot to handle here too.”
“Yeah, it’s manageable. Let’s go, the carriage is ready downstairs. We’ve temporarily kept it in the warehouse. There are too many people in the city, so bringing it around wouldn’t be safe.”
“Okay.”
Peiya got into the carriage and followed Maya to her residence.
At the warehouse, she saw the wolf creature tightly tied up, and beside it stood a woman in a black leather outfit, Karl.
“Hey, little girl. Nice to meet you. I’m Karl. Maya probably told you about me on the way, right?”
“Yes, hello, Miss Karl. Is this the wolf you caught?”
“Yep. This is all the information that can be shared. Take it and read it yourself. I won’t waste time explaining.”
“Alright.”
Peiya took the documents and started reading. At first glance, she saw the words ‘Demon Wolf Test Subject.’
So her guess might have been right, the Beast Tamer Association was trying to create an imitation of a demon wolf.
Thinking about the earlier information, the church probably knew about this. Which meant either the church was allowing the Beast Tamer Association to do this, or the association was just a pawn, doing the dirty work, ready to be abandoned if things were exposed.
No matter which it was, Peiya became very cautious.
She closed the file, nodded, and stepped forward to examine the demon wolf.
But this time was different.
The night before, Peiya had tried to put her witch power into objects. Although she failed several times, she finally managed to make a few single-use silver tools.
She activated the tool in her hand.
In an instant, her witch power quietly spread out.
